St Ernan’s by the Loch – another step forward
Once again, the old year ended on an exciting note for St Ernan’s by the Loch – on 14th December 2023, we received the great news that our application for Scottish Land Fund (SLF) Stage 2 funding has been successful. This means that the proposed purchase of St Ernan’s for the local community can go ahead, and to that end, negotiations with the Church of Scotland are moving forward.
We have spent much of the past year working with a team of architects, AGL Ltd., drawing up a feasibility study for the future of St Ernan’s. As part of this, we carried out a community consultation exercise, finding out how local people would like to see the project develop. The plans which emerged from this include the modernisation and refurbishment of the building, so that it can become a modern, versatile and safe centre, with kitchen and toilet facilities, environmentally sustainable heating and lighting, and a Wi-Fi connection. This centre will be available to all members of the community (and to visitors), for a wide range of spiritual, social and cultural pursuits. At the same time, the plans aim to respect the unique features of the church – its beautiful and tranquil loch-side setting, and its long cultural and historical connection with local people.
We look forward to the next exciting phase of the project and to hearing views and ideas from members of the local community. We greatly appreciate all your enthusiasm and support!
